Day 4 Recap - Hospital Group
We split into two groups today, one went to Rosa’s house (Steve, Nikki, Jessica, Nick, Gwen), the construction site, and the other went to the kids’ ward at the hospital (Phil, Autumn, Melody, Emily, Ben).
The group at the kids’ ward had an interesting day. A couple of us rocked the babies while the others did some coloring with the older kids. A staff member then came in to tell us that there had been a double-booking of schedules and that the kids were going to be spending time with some NHL hockey players who were instrumental in the creation of the Hockey for Haiti program. The staff had been putting up balloons and getting everything spic and span so it all started to make sense. Since the Hockey for Haiti campaign had raised enough money to build a number of the new buildings we had toured the other day we were not at all offended by having to clear out until the party was over. When the filming was over they invited us outside to watch the hockey players, Georges Laraque and P.K. Subban play floor hockey in the parking lot with the kids. After smiling nicely to the security detail and sweet talking P.K.’s handler, we were able to get him to pose with our group for a picture! The Hockey for Haiti campaign is working in conjunction with World Vision who provided the film crew and coordinated everything at the hospital with ICC. Phil was also able to introduce himself to the president of World Vision Canada, Dave Toycen, and to tell him about how our church youth have been involved with, and inspired by, the 30 Hour Famine. Once the hubbub was over it was back to coloring, beading, blowing bubbles, and playing catch with the kids. Ironically, the injury for the day occurred at the hospital when Ben scraped up his forearms climbing over a wall to get a ball for the kids.
