U.S. Board Members Visit Grace

This entry is brought to you by Tom Hunsdorfer, a U.S. Board Member who is currently in Haiti.

Some initial impressions after two days in Port-au-Prince:  There is a jarring juxtapositioning of people who are OK and people who lost everything and now live in a flimsy tent or lean-to.  One house survived, one is rubble.  There was a hand-painted sign on a collapsed home near the hospital: two missing, one dead. We saw a lot of pushing and shoving at the morning food distribution food distribution across the street.  Many people are still very hungry. Overall, the tone is subdued, and its clear that many people are dealing with great loss and post-traumatic stress disorder.

On the plus side, the hospital was very busy this morning, and the staff were doing a great job of treating children and adults in the outdoor tents and tarp areas that now serve as examining rooms.  People are making do and using their ingenuity to treat those who need care.  Grace Children's Hospital is a beacon of life right now for many people.

Peace to all.   Tom Hunsdorfer
