Phase 1 of Grace Children’s Hospital Reconstruction Is Making Progress; Children Moved Inside

Kalamazoo, Mich. June 16, 2010—International Child Care, USA is excited to report that the demolition and reconstruction project at Grace Children’s Hospital has begun. Around 30 Haitian workers are involved in the first phase of reconstruction, and had their first day of work clearing land behind the eye clinic building to begin construction of transitional facilities on June 9.

The workers are supervised by Techina, a Haitian engineering firm contracted to oversee design and reconstruction during the workday. At an orientation session, the first 30 workers were instructed in the history of ICC and Grace Children’s Hospital, as well as the work that ICC does. They will attend a health education session every day before the work day begins.

Since the earthquake, the children staying at Grace for treatment have been housed in tents. The children have recently been moved indoors, and are staying in a remodeled section of the hospital not damaged in the earthquake. They will be moved to the transitional housing when it is completed.

Preliminary drawings of the final structure are completed, and final drafts will begin soon as the demolition continues and the rest of the ground for the new facility is completed.

More details about the reconstruction project and how that individuals and organizations can become involved with the recovery of Grace Children’s Hospital can be obtained by calling 269-382-9960.
